How to Remove Grass from Driveway Cracks

by Sabrina Hunter

Having problems with unsightly grass growing on your patio and paved pathways?

Grass growing through the cracks of the driveway, sidewalk, and patio can be an eyesore and a common annoyance. The removal of persistent grass and weeds is simple and can improve the landscape with a polished look. However, these unwanted plants seem to flourish well in the crevices of a blistering hot paved pathway. The root of the plants and weeds must be extracted to reduce the chances of re-growth.

Let's take a look at some grass control options to help take control of the intrusive plants.

  • Apply Homemade Vinegar Herbicide

It is hard to pull out the entire weed from the cracks of a paved path. Therefore it is recommended that you apply some herbicide to the area to destroy them for good. Here are some simple steps to take:

  • Mix vinegar, dish soap and salt together in a spray bottle.

Apply generously to the weeds and be careful not to allow the water to run onto the flower beds. Due to the high acidic nature of the product, make sure to wear protective gear like gloves and glasses.

  • Pour Boiling Water

Eliminate weeds from your paved pathway by pouring boiling water on them. The scorching hot temperatures will kill weeds in an instant and less harmful to the environment. Use caution when handling boiling water, as it may cause serious burns if you spill some on yourself. When handling a pot of boiling water, make sure to wear protective gloves.

  • Seal Cracks

There's a good chance of weeds and plants from sprouting up again in your driveway and sidewalks. Seal the cracks in your paved pathway after the weeds have died. Grab some cement filler, mortar caulking product, or sealant for concrete or asphalt driveways at your nearest home improvement store. Fillers start from around $7 per tube and the best asphalt driveway sealer can cost around $100. Make sure to vacuum out the cracks and cervices before applying the filler.
